Members of JCI Bradford have teamed up with NHS Blood and Transplant to show their support for the Greatest Team in the World and encourage people to sign up to give blood to help save lives.

Throughout the summer, blood donation recruitment events will be take place across the country to encourage people to get off the bench and join the Greatest Team in the World. NHS Blood and Transplant needs around 200,000 new blood donors each year across England and North Wales to replace the team members who can no longer donate due to reasons such as ill health, pregnancy or foreign travel.

JCI Bradford members will be using social media to spread the word, visiting the Bradford Donor Centre to find out more about donating and hosting a stand in the Kirkgate shopping centre in Bradford on 12th July 2014 between 11am and 4pm.

Michelle Pemberton, Community Director of JCI Bradford, said: "We have over 50 years of experience and success working within our communities and supporting the people who live in the Bradford District. Our campaign with NHS Blood and Transplant aims to raise awareness of the local need for blood donors, show people that it is easy and quick to donate and that their donation could be the difference between life and death."

Donna Batty, Lead Donor Relations Manager for Bradford, said: "The number of new donors we need this year would more than fill the three stadiums England will play in for their three group games at the Football World Cup. Getting behind your team can feel really special. So can donating blood knowing that you're saving and improving lives."

There is also a need for more young donors and Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) donors to ensure we can continue to meet the needs of all patients now and in the years to come. Nearly half of those who have given blood over the last two years are over 45. And only 4% of our active blood donors are from BAME communities, while they represent around 14% of the population.

Donna Batty added: "Whether it is the Football World Cup, the Wimbledon tennis tournament, the Commonwealth Games, horse racing or motorsports, this year's summer is filled with sport. In Bradford we are asking people to join our existing donors who are already part of the Greatest Team in the World. So please register as a blood donor now and start donating blood.

"To have the support of JCI Bradford is terrific and we hope their members inspire people to sign up. Their idea to host a stand in the Kirkgate Shopping Centre, Bradford to raise awareness is the perfect place to reach the right people and get them interested in saving lives."

JCI Bradford will be using the twitter handle @jcigiveblood and hashtag #jcigiveblood as well as our JCI Bradford Community Facebook page and website to share information, stories and updates.

In general, as long as you are fit and healthy, weigh over 7 stone 12 lbs (50kg) and are aged between 17 and 66 (up to 70 if you have given blood before) you should be able to give blood. If you are over 70, you need to have given blood in the last two years to continue donating.
